Ben Walters of Time Out New York succinctly defines the coming of age genre as follows “An adolescent (or group thereof) goes through a challenging series of bittersweet experiences. He’s forced to put away childish things, emerging a little bruised, sadder but wiser, and more prepared for the travails of adulthood.”

Broken Birdie Chirpin is the quintessential rock n’ roll coming of age novel. It tells the story of a watershed year in the life of a gifted, but mostly maladjusted, teenage rock n’ roller. He embarks on a whirlwind journey from mysterious loner through the upper echelons of the vibrant London music scene in search of his rock n’ roll fantasy.

The story opens just as our rock n’ roller seemingly falls for Becky, a rough-around-the-edges schoolmate who sees past his shortcomings. His life is quickly complicated by an encounter with Skeffington, a popular jock with musical aspirations of his own. The not-so-chance encounter sets in motion a series of events that will forever change each of their lives. As the summer months unfold so do the dreams and tragedies of our protagonist. Bloody hell. Even the smallest decisions define life for decades to come.

Broken Birdie Chirpin edition by Adam Tarsitano Literature Fiction eBooks

Author Adam G. Tarsitano delivers the raw and emotional story of a teen boy who just wants to make music but everything keeps getting in his way, such as his annoying older brother (who is perfect in his parents' eyes), his father who he just never got along with, his first girlfriend Becky who he cares a lot for but life ain't that simple, his band mate and fellow lyricist Skeffington (a jock who wants to be a rock and roller) and all the birds or fan girls who just want to snog him.

What's a guy to do? Mr. Tarsitano's writing is powerful and his use of local colloquialism makes it an authentic read. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time reading about John Lennon as a child and teenager before he became a famous Beatle. Lennon's melancholy story of his boyhood struck a chord with me which I related to all my life...and Broken Birdie Chirpin did the same thing.

I particularly enjoyed how the main character, no matter how he tried to forget his first love Becky, always seemed to be drawn back to her throughout the story. Even when his life twisted and turned, Becky somehow reappeared either in his heart or by chance. The pain that twisted his soul felt very real which makes me think that the author may have laced the story with his own personal experience(s). It just felt too real to be pure fiction... but I could be wrong.

I truly enjoyed Broken Birdie Chirpin and give it 5/5 stars. Well written, powerful and entertaining.

Broken Birdie Chirpin edition by Adam Tarsitano Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I got this book as a freebie in exchange for a review. I started reading it right away, but only got through a few chapters before I felt too confused about the timeline and frustrated by the presumably British teen jargon it's written in. I started it again today, and read the whole thing. It was still confusing and frustrating, but at least the story part was interesting. I like the characters and was intrigued by what was happening.

One thing I didn't like was the style in which it was written. Maybe because I'm a middle-aged American woman and the previous reviewers are ever so hip British teens, but I just couldn't see rating this book five stars. It was just too hard to comprehend.
Pg. 9

"I've got to ramble, slapper. Dad will bend my ear if I'm late, especially if he's bladdered."
"I'm not even knackered yet."
"Keep your chin up. I'll be a right charmer tomorrow so Sister Pranny can't snaffle our time."

Yes, I can figure out what it means, (I did get all the way through A Clockwork Orange after all), and the slang does portray the feel of the characters, but since the book was written all in first person, the whole thing is in this jargon, not just the dialogue, making me work to understand. For another example,
Pg. 45

Lincoln and Frisby laid down the one drop riddim while I finessed the skank. Skeffington sang in his grittiest jamdown inflection. The bridge seemed wide open however, and I transformed into an iron bird setting course for Trench Town. I filled it to the blooming rafters with a sundrenched island groove...

Okay, I'm not a rock musician either, so maybe this passage means something clear to them. Maybe it's just metaphor getting away from me. But I'd like to know more clearly what is happening.

Then the story's structure. There were all these mentions of people and scenes that seem dropped in from nowhere without explanation about what they were doing in the story, since they didn't seem to match what had been happening in the story so far. Once one was explained as a dream, so I kept wondering if these little vignettes were dreams, imaginings, flashbacks or flashforwards, premonitions, or what. Finally, literally at the end of the book I decided what they must have been. But I'm still not 100% positive.

The story might have gotten four stars (pretty good) but the style and structure that made me work to figure out what was going on brought it down to two stars.
it was a quick, easy read. Some of the slang was a bit difficult at times. Overall it was a good read.
This debut novel puts a new spin on teenage angst and taps into the joys and heartache of self-discovery and first love. A great read. Looking forward to more from this author.
Great read! This novel brings you right back to those youthful, carefree days in everyone's childhood. The writer really captures the dialect of the area and paints a vivid picture in your mind.
Highly recommend!
A fantastic coming of age novel. The characters move fluidly around the twists and turns of teenage angst and rock ans roll dreams. The writing is intelligent, whitty, and will quickly draw you onto the the story. Beware, it's hard to put down once you've begun. It's a definite must read!
So, the plot itself is pretty cliche. But the book is a work of art. The dialect is fascinating and even though I still have no idea what some of it says, it makes it a damn fun read. I want to read it again just so I can catch some more of it.
A book for lovers of Rock n Roll or even just underdogs. It made me think of the "bad" boys that I was attracted to in high school. I enjoyed the side story of revenge against the narrator's merciless brother almost as much as the main journey of their epic band.
Being American, I found the slang challenging but it never interfered with my understanding. If you have a , you can look the words up easily enough in order to figure out what they mean. I think the slang makes the narrator believable - he is a rebellious teenage boy after all.
I didn't like that the author never gives the narrator a name. He is just referred to as "slapper," "mate," "me duckie," and others. By the end of the novel, I enjoyed the time-jumping plot, but the fact that it was not broken up by chapters really confused me at first.
Overall, a very enjoyable read with just the right amount of drugs (some alcohol), sex (mostly kissing), and Rock n Roll fantasy.
